Is America Repeating a Dangerous Pattern?

Oct 20, 2026

When the people of ancient Israel wanted a king to solve their problems, God warned them against the abuses of authoritarian government (1 Samuel 8:11-17). Samuel spoke to them about abuse of power, economic cronyism, and high taxes, and about the end result: slavery. The Israelites chose that road anyway because they had rejected God as their King (1 Samuel 8:7), and America is in great danger of following that same path to tyranny.

Three thousand years later, in 1944, economist F.A. Hayek, who later won the Nobel Prize, gave the same warning in a book called The Road to Serfdom. It is time to dust off that warning and begin praying, because throughout America, the socialist threat to our freedoms is gaining traction.

Hayek wrote the book during the Second World War as a warning against socialism and its cousins: fascism, National Socialism (Nazism), and communism. As a European, he had watched most of the democracies formed after the First World War lose their freedoms and become authoritarian or totalitarian nations. He identified the process by which freedom was lost and called it the road to serfdom. That process is still at work today, threatening our freedoms here in America.

The slippery slope to slavery begins with good intentions·to meet demands for justice, fairness, or some other good cause. Democracies, being messy and slow to act, begin to turn over their legislative functions to bureaucrats who are believed to be wiser and more efficient. It then falls to unelected government officials to pick winners and losers and to limit individual freedoms to force compliance with their rulings. In the end, the government eliminates constitutional limits on its power, shutting out democratic input and eliminating individual rights.

The socialist agenda for America began decades ago, as our educational institutions were gradually taken over by big-government proponents. They believed that America's problems could best be solved by experts like themselves, and they persuaded Congress to create government agencies with vast powers, often serving as judge, jury, and executioner. Thankfully, the Supreme Court has recently reined in some of these government policies, but big-government advocates have responded with a plan to pack the Supreme Court with political hacks.

In fact, all of the systems designed to protect our freedoms are under attack: the federal system, the separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, the two houses of Congress, and even the Constitution itself. People like Hayek watched as the Germans lost their freedoms when a party that called itself socialist, the National Socialists, won a plurality in the Reichstag, Germany's parliament, and leveraged that position to gain tyrannical power. They filled the courts with Nazi judges, who let the government confiscate property, imprison and murder its opponents, and trample the rights of its citizens. It is a pattern repeated around the world, from Communist Russia to Venezuela, wherever socialism has gained power.
